As long as we're on the subject of montages...

I'm kind of digging this one.

  1. Oh - the two old ladies from If These Walls Could Talk 2...that bit made me cry for like an hour!

  3. I've seen:

Desert Hearts (which was a Seminal experience in my tender adolescence)
    Boys Don't Cry
    Silkwood, ages ago
    High Art
    Thelma and Louise
Personal Best, now I'm thinking of it, but forever ago
    Gia
    Heavenly Creatures
    Bound
part of Basic Instinct, and had to read the screenplay for screenwriting class
Hotel New Hampshire, ages ago (all I remember is Rob Lowe in nurse drag or something)
    Watermelon Woman
part of Go Fish (it gave me hives, what can I tell you)
part of Fried Green Tomatoes (ditto and THEN some)
    When Night Falls
    I've Heard the Mermaids Singing
    Better Than Chocolate
    Bar Girls
    Aimee and Jaguar
If These Walls Could Talk 2
    Chasing Amy (HIVES)

Best of those: Aimee and Jaguar (good but depressing), Desert Hearts (although sadly not nearly the frisson it once had), Bound (yummeh). I think I've Heard the Mermaids Singing was good, although can barely remember it. and Boys Don't Cry was great, although it's not something I'd watch again--again, not what you'd call a feel good movie...

and Heavenly Creatures was good, if yet another Killer Lesbian movie and I've gone right off Peter Jackson.

I liked the first two sections of If These Walls Could Talk 2 (yeah, the first part was unbearably sad); the third part with Ellen and Sharon Stone was unwatchable.

I enjoyed Watermelon Woman, Bar Girls and Better Than Chocolate, although they were none of 'em what you'd call hugely polished. it's nice at least to see movies where 1) lesbians who don't look like Ellen or Sharon Stone are part of the main narrative 2) I recognize some cultural shit 3) some fun sexay parts, sure 4) nobody DIES.

  4. oh, and Gia was pretty good, in a TV movie sort of way, I guess. nice outfits anyway, and some yummy scenes. Angelina Jolie being all borderline...well, who would've thunk it, you know...

  5. I have to admit I'm disappointed to see depictions of Brandon Teena in what's apparently a montage about queer women, of course.

    That aside, awwwwwwwww.

  6. Seriously. Being openly homosexual in any way in a movie has becoming a better way to get killed off than being black in a movie.

There's this great hilarious play by the Five Lesbian Brothers called "Brave Smiles: Another Lesbian Tragedy." Basically it's -every- tragic movie where there's a dead and/or miserable and alone lesbian made in the past x decades, you know, Madchen in Uniform, Children's Hour, whatever that stupid DH Lawrence thing is, all rolled into one great big ball o' empurpled twagedy. genius really.

  7. Lol. But honestly, it's one of the reasons I wasn't so excited about Brokeback Mountain, for instance. I have a gay male friend who was over the moon about it, and so excited it won oscars, etc, etc. Not that it wasn't a good movie. But, you know, when a movie with gay people where they get to live happily ever after and no one dies horribly wins oscars, *that* will be revolutionary.
