nN~ruQt?>/!tHHPLLlttt...

Just a tiny question to the authors of "word verification," here and elsewhere:

The goal is to make sure the poster is a human and not a spambot, right? Not some sort of vision test, or guessing game, or cruel jest at our expense, right?

So, what's up with the calligraphy? The squiggly-wigglies? The transparent floaty letters hovering in some sort of typographic twilight zone? The dare I say hieroglyphics, even?

Would it be too much to ask that the word to be typed be, you know, *typed?*

In readable letters?

So that we could enter the post within the first two or three tries?

  1. That squiggliness is how one fools a computer, which could otherwise detect whatever sequence of letters and numbers it is. It's so munged that a machine can't easily make it out, but a human can decipher it.

  2. Trin's right since, if you go to someplace like myfonts.com, you can upload an image of a font and a machine will tell you what font it might be.

Even so, some of these suckers are irritating this old broad! I mean, I'm not that old, but sometimes I feel like I must be blind or something! So, yeah... some kind of joke!

(And, while my eyesight is going, my memory is pretty good and I knew immediately that you were talking about Stoller. I kept seeing that thing dropped all over Blogoliciousville and I finally had to have a rant!)

  3. and, you know, of course immediately after I posted that, blogger decides to shut down for the day; and before it made everything completely inacessible, it was doing some seriously frustrating Groundhog Day shit with the comments. they'd post, then vanish! post, then vanish! i was all, "okay, Computer Gods! I'm sorry I insulted you! no, really, squiggles are fine! love them squiggles! can i get some return to normalcy here, now, hm?

and one comment's still left in some strange limbo. i dunno. i think maybe they really are taking over, you know. the machines.

that, ormaybe blogger kind of, you know, erm..

nothing! nothing! great job! no problem at all not to be able to access my blog all day and not know what the hell was up, truly, no reason to put something like "system will be offline for the day" on the front page or anything..."

(i mean you never know if they're WATCHING, do you, or what ELSE THEY can do...)

smile, nod, back away. NICE blogger. NICE machine. pat, pat.

  4. The bots can read typed letters and characters YO, so either turn it off or get used to it, I've found that if you turn it on for a week or so then turn it back off the bot traffic also backs off.

And you know you get more good feedback if you turn off comment moderation, that takes more time for you and for your readers to get that desperately wanted commentry, later...

  5. Yeh, I probably will turn it off for a bit.

Mainly I was bitching 'cause *I* can't get through when I'm commenting somewhere.

  6. As others have said, the bots can do a pretty good job of reading fonts. Even my wiggly, annoying verification image sometimes isn't enough. Once a month, maybe, one will slip through and get caught in moderation.

That said, I know that my image is one of the more annoying ones, but I don't have the confidence to try to make one myself. Apparently this kind has gotten some of the best results for keeping bots at bay, although I'd like to give the Blogger style a whirl if I could find some PHP code for it.

  8. Amen, sister! It's bad enough that I have baby boomer eyes and wear tri-focals. Then they add the ridiculously hard-to-read letters to the verification process and make me feel even more blind than I already am...

    Cranky & under-caffeinated this morning...

  9. That's why I'm loving Wordpress. They have a plugin that keeps the spammers from even seeing the site at all. What blog software do you use takanji? I usually look, especially when it's a group blog.
