"I believe the children are our future." To wit: sick, uninsured, and who gives a shit?

Fuck the future and fuck the kids, say Bush and a bunch of (not all) Congressional Republicans! YEEHAW.

Republican opponents said the bill would encourage too many middle-income families to substitute government-subsidized insurance for their private insurance. The bill gives states financial incentives to cover families with incomes up to three times the federal poverty level — $61,950 for a family of four.

"That's not low-income. That's a majority of households in America," said Rep. Wally Herger, R-Calif.

YES, you stupid fuck, that's the fucking POINT, because the majority of households in America can't afford decent isurance. DUH! Oh well; enjoy your fucking taxpayer-subsidzed health care, Mr. -government employee.- Send the rest of us a lozenge if you can spare it, will you?

I think about our insurance, and the policies offered by the company my husband works for, and about the very expensive medical procedure I went through recently. I've considered my husbands income, and felt gratitude that we were able to afford it all, even with the extremely high deductible we had to pay. My husband's assistant complained about how the majority of people working there would have had to suck it up and live with the chronic pain instead of having the surgery that I had, because the deductibles are so out of reach of pretty much anyone making less that 6 figures. It is NOT RIGHT that it's like that. I don't know what the answer is. I don't think it's a government run system (because the govt is so stellar at screwing other things up, I have no faith in their ability to manage health care), but I don't know what the right answer would be.

yet ANOTHER argument as to why we should all pack up and move to france, where they have REAL health care. (and all the brie & baguettes you can eat!)

You know, the sick thing is - this is the RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD we're talking about here.

THE. RICHEST. COUNTRY.

And yet people are uninsured and under-insured. Hounded by debt-collectors over their hospital bills. And so on.

Yeah, somehow all those other countries with universal health care have yet to collapse into Road Warrior-esque states of decay.

I could seriously cry. You don't know how much I wish we had real health care in this country. For one, I wouldn't be in utter agony right now from a rotten fucking tooth.

other peoples' gov'ts seem to do okay. better, for damn sure, and "better," i would take. frankly it's doing it right now anyway; it just goes through a middleman, and we end up paying (more) for it. and getting less. what'dya think corporate subsidization is?

Since I've been in school and I live in a really liberal state with good state benefits, I've been poor enough to qualify for health care through the state government.

It rocks. It's not perfect, but it's better than most of the employee-sonsored plans I've had in my life. Because of it, I can afford my antidepressants and thyroid meds, and I can even go to counselling. Maybe I'll even make it through school and eventually have enough income to pay taxes again someday.

At the very least, it keeps me out of the ER for non-emergency care.

I used to think that the government couldn't run a health care system, but I've been pleasantly suprised by this.

The dental benefits suck though.
