Bitch PhD=fail.

Follow the links at Questioning Transphobia to see why. No, I'm not gonna bother directly linking, or going deeper into an analysis of -how- she's being such a total asspillbox*. It's the same old shit, basically, and QT covers it all. Just FYI.

*While -literal- pillboxes can have a certain retro charm, I feel obliged to point out that they do not, in fact, cover one's ass. No matter how ironically one tries to angle them.

ETA: What she said.

and particularly what little light said in the comments:

There’s so much to unpack just here:

I didn’t admit, because I know people can be quite sensitive about these things, that I know I wouldn’t be able to work it, no matter how appropriate with a pre-op T-girl. Pity, she was a pleasant enough fellow.

Here’s the assumptions on hand:

1. It’s a normal, understandable, obvious thing that a straight man wouldn’t want to sleep with a trans woman, or at least a trans woman with a penis. He just wouldn’t be able to “work it.” This is unfortunate, because

2. It’s particularly appropriate to engaging in teabagging, considered exotic and degrading in the context of this piece–the kind of act you’d use to hate-fuck someone–with a trans woman. They’re into that kind of thing, or can at least be paid to do it. Both 1. and 2. are really because

3. She, being a trans woman, is actually a “fellow.”

These are just the assumptions forming a baseline foundation for the joke, that Ann Coulter looks “exactly like” a trans woman. You need all those assumptions to unpack that this means that she looks like a perverted man in drag, which is degrading, which is part one of the joke. The other part of the joke is that while it might be acceptable to hate-fuck a Michelle Malkin or Michelle Bachmann look-alike, and therefore by proxy either of those women, someone who looks like Ann Coulter–and who therefore looks like a trans woman–and therefore looks like a man–isn’t even worthy of hate-fucking. She’s not even worth sexually degrading out of hostile feelings, even if she volunteers, which she would, because that’s how trans people are.

That’s the basis for the joke. That’s what’s underneath it. It’s premised on saying that no matter how much you might want to fantasize about taking a neoconservative woman down a peg or two with sexual degradation, Ann Coulter, being or being like a trans woman, is so polluted you wouldn’t even do that because it involves touching her.

Wow, I’m just all over giggling right now. That’s just the funniest joke I’ve ever head. Sorry, BPHD, that you can’t feel “safe” to make a joke like that “yet” because people just aren’t cool enough, and are still too oversensitive, to get your hip humor. Life is so hard.

I mostly lurk here, belledame, but I love your blog and I was so happy when you showed up on that thread. (Well, not "happy," exactly, because her post should never have been written, but... relieved? Or just looking forward to the part when you call bullshit on the "joke" in a way that's hilarious, appropriately mocking, and straight to the point? Well, anyway, I'm just glad you're in the world and you write.)

Three different issues here.

1. I'm not attracted to men. If it doesn't involve getting naked then it doesn't matter, but I really don't see myself have sex with someone with a penis, regardless of gender identity. Yes, there's anal, but who says I'm into it?

2. The "I'm only calling them ___ because they'll be insulted" line is really old. Guys I knew in elementary school used that to defend every anti-gay comment they made. They'd say to someone, "Shut up, you homo!" and I might interject, "What's wrong with being gay?", and then they'd say "Oh, to him, that's an insult."

3. Ann Coulter makes people say stupid things. The Ann Coulter is a man jokes tend to proliferate on blogs regardless of how feminist the commenter body is. I don't know Bitch Ph.D. well, but I used to be exasperated at how the Pharyngula commenter body one day raged against academic sexism and on the other called Ann Coulter mannish. I think it's shrillness more than anything else.

"1. I'm not attracted to men. If it doesn't involve getting naked then it doesn't matter, but I really don't see myself have sex with someone with a penis, regardless of gender identity. Yes, there's anal, but who says I'm into it?"

A penis is not a male organ. What seems to bother you more is the lack of a vulva.

I don't really care about someone's body configuration, identity, or whatever, as long as their personality clicks with mine, we have similar interests, and that it works out. Preferably without STIs as well. Besides that? I don't care.

I'm pansexual, but have a preference for men romantically, because they tend to seek my type (Little Girl into ageplay) more often than women do.

Not for everyone yeah, but I just don't see the point about body configuration being such a bother unless you're trying to conceive a child. I just can't see it.

It's not like all vulvas are 'equal', much like all penis aren't, there's short, long, big, thiny etc. I just don't get that when it comes to transwomen (and sometimes transmen, but I'm not informed enough there), it comes down to a black & white issue. But when it's cis women or cis men, it doesn't matter.

belledame222 said...

What Sara said in the first couple paras. Also, there is a big difference between "I am not attracted to x/such and such would be a dealbreaker for me personally" and argh. What little light said, again, per the "joke." It's a classic "punchline" playing on an assumption of the audience's shared transphobia and homophobia (among other things). Ew, haw haw haw. He's not rejecting a personals Ad on Craig's List. It's a "joke." Geddit, geddit??

per the third: no, Coulter doesn't make anyone do anything. She's hateful; this shit is hateful. One doesn't cause the other any more than it cancels it out.

and "ew, she's so repulsive and unattractive, she's a MAN, which is the same thing as TRANS of course, haw haw haw" is hardly limited to Coulter "jokes." Shit's fucking ubiquitous. If you haven't noticed it, well, there's a reason for that.

EthylBenzene said...

Littlelight is awesome and correct.

Also.

"no, Coulter doesn't make anyone do anything. She's hateful; this shit is hateful. One doesn't cause the other any more than it cancels it out."

Yes. There's plenty to insult about Coulter without engaging in gratuitous transphobia, misogyny, and racism. If you "have" to engage in oppression to insult someone, you'll probably engage in oppression under a completely different asinine excuse some other time.

Man. I did the exact same thing that B’s boyfriend did, didn’t I? I used a transphobic comment to make fun of transphobia. I apologize, and will honor the ban.

belledame222 said...

see: any number of ghastly "comedy" movies where "she's a MAN, baby!" is the punchline where the guy gets to go vomit and/or punch the transgressor, just like in that artsy movie that won all those awards.

every "unattractive" (read: anyone whoever it is doesn't like and who doesn't look like a supermodel) woman in power has gotten at least some of those cracks at one time or another, also. if it's not outright transphobia as per Coulter, then it's she's "mannish" (and thus a ball-bustin' dyke). or she -looks- like a "man," "ew, who'd want to hit -that-," put a bag over her head, etc.

someone decided that Coulter's height and other features + her name made "mAnn" and "Annie the you guessed it" the hi-larious gag du jour and it stuck. the fact that she's the most immediate example that comes to mind wrt explicitly transmisogynistic jokes in politics doesn't mean it wasn't an extremely familiar and tired trope already.

belledame222 said...

Or, you know. "It's Pat!" "Har har, ew icky, can't tell if 'it's' a man or a woman, but either way it's disgusting, and of course we only think of 'it' in sexualized i.e. hatefucking terms."

The "joke" only works because it's -automatically- a punchline; Coulter just happens to be a "deserving" screen for that particular projection.

It's also the flipside of this.

belledame222 said...

He comes to treat her as a subhuman, the same way she treats him.And there you have it. That's what the problem is here. The automatic assumption that trans=subhuman. Again, it's why the "joke" works. It's what Little Light is saying. It's what everyone there is saying. It's what Bitch PhD is enforcing when she refuses to engage the trans commenters directly, take responsibility for her comment or even that it's a big deal.

I left this other political snark site because some asshole in the comments wouldn't stop using someone--yes the someone in question was horrible in her own right--who'd disclosed in a comment that she was of trans (and/or possibly intersex, wasn't clear from the context and my memory, anyway) history. He dragged out the comment and used all kinds of explicitly dehumanizing language--"it," and worse--to mock her.

When called on this, asshole's excuse, as here, was that the person -asked- for it by being so very assholian.

and in this case, he implied strongly that the person must be making it all up, and I was ridiculous for calling him out. Because, y'know, it's not like this affects -real people- *besides* the person he was hounding (again, not sympathetic in her own right, this was a virulently racist PUMA and so forth), because, well, either they don't matter or they don't exist. Like fantods. Laughable fantods.

You see this shit all the time.

BPhD clearly knows a -little- better because unlike this other chode she is or should be familiar with some of this shit from her much larger commentariat, feminist blogland, etc. -at least.-

but she's still choosing to side with her dickhead boyfriend. Because, you know, it's -funny.- Suck her balls. Bra-vo.

belledame222 said...

whenever people I know--the other week, friend of the family, nice gay man in my parent's age cohort--use the "Coulter's a MAN, baby" thing, I explain that the problem isn't that it's too mean to Coulter, it's that you're insulting the -other- people, you know, the actual trans people? by using them as a punchline/bludgeon this way.

I think he -sort- of got it. Maybe. It was clearly a new idea for him.

Alon Lecvy: I know not everyone is pansexual. Heck most people I talk to don't know what pansexual means.

I'm more personality-sexual than anything else. Appearance is way below personality for me.

Physically, to me, a person I have sex with must click personality-wise, but beyond that, it's like a car to go to work, I don't care if its manual, automatic, 5 speeds or 3, if its blue, or red, or Hello Kitty pink, as long as it gets me to work in one piece. Maybe I'm a bit too spiritual there. I see the body as a mere tool for the spirit to "do stuff", so I don't judge on what the diceroll got you in terms of tool as much as the spirit itself.

Anonymous said...

and belledame, wrt your last comment, it goes to the same thing as "This is sooo gay" to mean boring, lame, stupid. So that's supposedly not supposed to belittle actual gay people, because now the term gay is also associated with boring, lame or stupid.

Few people even get that.

EthylBenzene said...

I'm sorry, that was, perhaps, needlessly snarky, it just seemed SUCH an out-of-place comment in this thread. Sorry for the snark.

I don't think it's exactly trans=subhuman; it's more trans-who-doesn't-agree-with-me=subhuman. It crops up elsewhere. I'm sure Jane Hamsher and the defenders of her blackface practices are horrified every time they encounter racism expressed by a conservative, and have no qualms about attacking white conservatives for being privileged. I've seen this personally, too - I lost count how many people praised my precociousness when I agreed with them and then attacked my youth and inexperience when I said something they didn't like a few threads later. Basically, what Elly said.

Alon Levy said...

Also on the subject of the thread on QT, it's interesting that trans women report being attacked on feminist blogs for being too strident: "You have a very shouty and domineering person at [blog name]. Real women are not shouty and domineering." Nobody's ever said anything like that to me on feminist blogs, even when I took on the entire commenter body at once. They would either address my arguments or call me privileged. They never said I should just be quieter - they said I should repent and change my views to theirs.

EthylBenzene said...

""lame" really does have very specific connotations."

Yes and it's one of those words I take personally, so.

Drab, vapid, unimaginative, dreary, irksome, tedious, tiresome.

Foolish, gullible, ill-advised, uninformed, willfully ignorant, obtuse, pointless, shortsighted, unthinking.

Drakyn said...

No Alon, when you say "I'm not attracted to men" and then go on to conflate "men" with "people who have a penis", then you are in fact saying that trans women are men.

belledame222 said...

Besides what GG and Drakyn are telling you--and you really might want to put down the shovel:

"Nobody asked you sir, she said."

honestly mandos, going there doesn't even amuse me at this point, it just makes me feel ill. I think other people here would probably feel the same way.

queen emily said...

I'm always fascinated with how cis straight men so frequently have to declaim that no, they're not attracted to trans women (and then bring out some transphobic logic that having a penis means being a man).

Cos, you know, we were all SO curious. Waiting with baited breath. Especially the lesbian trans women. And the ones with partners. We care, we really do. We're all just sitting here dreaming of your approval, ever available for your sweaty manlove.

Cos none of you ever say that and then go on to sexually harass US, even when we're lesbians with partners or just flat out not interested. Noooooooo, that never happens.

belledame222 said...

They would either address my arguments or call me privileged. They never said I should just be quieter - they said I should repent and change my views to theirs.Well, yeah. There's a reason for that. It's the same one that allows both the "radical feminist" and the erstwhile progressive hipster to throw out the same old sneery phobic bullshit whilst blissfully wrapped up in not only their cis privilege but their straight privilege, respective boyfriend and husband included. And so on, and so on, and so on.

belledame222 said...

but yes: it's called "transmisogyny" for a reason. It's transphobia, and it's also misogyny, too, also.

belledame222 said...

the fail may be amusing sometimes, the toxic levels of transphobia (with some nifty homophobia along for the ride I note) kind of not so much for people who've been overloaded already, thx.

the sort of thing that does amuse me: Heart took her Fight the Lies blog private. The blog where she was fighting the defamations about her character, that is. Which is kind of perfect.

belledame222 said...

belledame222 said...

I dunno, Bitch PhD seems to be doing just fine out in the open there basically.

Mandos said...

Oh, I make a distinction between FAIL and metaFAIL. FAIL is just that. MetaFAIL is a rejection of understanding the process by which FAIL occurred. I find the lulz of metaFAIL much greater than the lulz of FAIL. MetaFAILures embrace their FAIL wholeheartedly.

Alon Levy said...

Emily: if you don't care, you don't have to care. It's just that sometimes I get the feeling that some trans activists paint people who aren't sexually attracted to them with the same brush they paint people who murder them. At least, that's how I felt after reading LL's comment.
