Two quizzes, and two to grow on.

You may have seen this before--hell, even at my spot, i don't know, i'm apparently up to my 500th post now--but alphabitch reminded me that this is a fun little quiz:
Beliefnet's Belief-O-Matic. You may (or may not) be surprised by the results.

You may also learn something new about yourself from another oldie but goodie, The Political Compass Test. It's not just left/right.

anyway if you do take either, lemme know the results in comments. Inquiring Minds and all.

So, there's been a lot of talk about "empowerment" in the feminist-verse. What does that mean to you, womenfolk? Renegade Evolution wants to know.

Meanwhile, from the individual to the collective: Lauren has an ongoing project where she wants to know what knowledge you can share, particularly wrt money issues and getting by: Help Us Help Ourselves. read the first collection/carnival here.

My result for the Political Compass--i've taken it before, it changes slightly from time to time, but always well in the lower left hand corner: (i.e. left/libertarian):

Economic Left/Right: -7.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.38

I hate that quiz, quesitons like this:

There is now a worrying fusion of information and entertainment.

Throw me becuase I know that the words "now" and "worrying" are inaccurate or up for debate, because the borderline between news and entertainment has been blurred into nonexistence since they first started writing stuff down, most egyption hieroglyphs were just excuses to draw large nobs on everything and have lactation all over the place, and then there's the pamphlets and use of the printed words in western europe during the whole enlightenment period, and it's all so fucking complex that I can't put my position on that question into a simple agree/disagree spectrum, it demands nuance ffs.

But I guess what they meant to ask is "do you think rupert murdoch is an evil bastard?", so I guess I strongly agree...

I kinda object to most of the premise as well, stalin was rightwing, the man named himself "the man of steel" and had a stupid 70's porn moustache - he's rightwing ffs.

yeah, they're none of 'em perfectly constructed.

and yes, "rupert murdoch is an evil bastard" was how i interpreted that one as well.

i expect they're also going off purported ideals as opposed to what so and so actually -did.- i could be wrong.

I thought the statement about the rich paying too much tax was misleading, because I think EVERYONE pays too much tax.

I'm also an Orthodox Quaker, according to Belief-O-Matic. Which is true except there isn't a Quaker congregation here. So I'm Methodist instead.

Remember that there are multiple good reasons for skepticism whether these things are actually measures. In particular, I wonder how well the authors of the Political Compass understand political & economic ideas.

On the PC test, I usually get -5.38 economic and -9.08 social, give or take.

R. Mildred, Stalin was economically left-wing. The regime he created had a rock-bottom Gini index and no fascist-style corporatist control. The test correctly pegs him as a social authoritarian and an economic leftist.

Egalitarianism doesn't equal support for Soviet-style central planning.
Egalitarianism doesn't equal economic nationalism. Egalitarianism doesn't equal assuming class in some (unspecified) way trumps nationality.
Self-ownership egalitarianism can conflict with welfarist egalitarianism.
Egalitarianism isn't the same thing as opposition to commodification.
Egalitarianism isn't unambiguously measured by one's views on targets in monetary policy.
Egalitarianism isn't unambiguously measured by views on many of the other things the Political Compass codes as leftist.

it's not a perfect test, no.

still, i thought if nothing else it's useful for noting that in fact all of the major D presidential candidates (Kucinich excepted) are/were both right and authoritarian of center, albeit closer to the center than Bush.

they seem to be using a sort of of ummm, well what is it; transnationalist understanding of current left economics.

i just pulled that directly out of my ass, you know

Maybe it's a reflection of the type of personality that runs for president, coupled with the idea that they wouldn't get elected at all if they ran on a far left-of-center platform. Fact is, many many folk are basically socially and economically conservative, and to alientate them completely would be shooting oneself in the political foot.

Alon Levy said...

I think the test's deliberately built to make governments and politicians look more right-wing than ordinary people. There's no way Sweden is on the y-axis while I'm halfway between it and the left edge of the map.

KH, the test doesn't measure egalitarianism, but economic leftism. It doesn't measure the right subcomponents - for example, it puts too much emphasis on corporate power and too little on economic equality (hence the rightward skew of the political mainstream) - but still, that's what it's supposed to do.

I've been thinking of designing an alternative test that has the same axes but different questions, but I'll only do it if people are interested in it (in which case input is always appreciated).

i suppose that's what the site means by "left wing economically," wrt the whole medical and dental plan; the compleat right wing econ would be like, if you were meant to have strong teeth you would HAVE strong teeth! you would fight in the market and eat meat directly off the cow, like us! grr!

I swear, it must pick UU for EVERYTHING, since I'm a pretty devout (ha) athiest. (Nontheist?) I guess Secular Humanism is close. But Liberal Quaker?

Also, like Jack, my grandparents would be ashamed that Roman Catholic came in dead last. (But I like their churches/paintings/sculptures/Italy, so maybe it's okay?)

And Spiritual Type... I don't like a lot of these questions (such as the disasters/murders one; bad things don't make me think there is no God, it just doesn't make me think "why, God, why?". And a couple of the questions are framed as "in general, my opinions on religion are... and for ME I don't want it, but for others I'm neutral. So.)

30 - Spiritual Dabbler, borderline Hardcore Skeptic. "Open to spiritual matters but far from impressed."

And politically:
Left/Right -9.25 (!!)
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian -8.10

...putting me left of and more libertarian than Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama. No wonder I vote NDP.

I honestly didn't realize I'd gone THAT far left. And I was going middle of the road for a lot of those! I've taken this test about a bajillion times, too. I think I'm just getting progressively closer to the bottom left corner. One day I'll fall off.
