5 questions meme

Via Renegade.

Here's the deal:

Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better. If I already know you well, expect the questions may be a little more intimate!
You WILL update your journal/bloggy thing/whatever with the answers to the questions.
You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

So, here were my five:

Okay, since I am so going to have to come to NY and visit...where is one place we would have to go?

Oo. Well, let's see. If there's a bunch of us, we need to go to Flushing for dim sum, fer sher. The Museum of Sex was a trip, with Heidi and Kristin, probably worth seeing once. Central Park, if the weather permits. perhaps the Met, particularly if there's an exhibit on one of your epochs of interest. I'd name the perfect bar, but I've yet to find it. am hunting. Otherwise...I take requests & play by ear.

Have you ever wanted to have kids?

Ever so often, I think about it. It's hard to wrap my mind around the concept of it at the moment, honestly; I don't think I'm in anything like a good position to do it, and the clock is ticking for me biologically at least. But...who knows.

What do you think pushes someone from 'concerned citizen' to martyr?

Not totally sure I understand this. If I'm reading "martyr" with a negative connotation, um, I'd say...poor boundaries.

Do you think your smarts intimidate people?

I got a lot of flak as a kid, used to try to tamp it down a lot. These days...well, mostly, on the surface at least, I figure, I certainly don't try to, but if it does anyway, well...fuck 'em. What can you do?

Favorite color?

Purple, usually.

Takers?

Finis! That was a buncha fun, Belle. Thank you!

Alon Levy said...

Belledame:

1. It's treating me very well. It's certainly better, i.e. more interesting, than all the previous places I lived in. Even the weather is reasonable, thanks to the carbon emissions the rest of the country is producing.

2. I want to be a math professor, preferably at a non-crappy institution. But that's not the easiest job in the world to get; in more numerical terms, a given university accepts one applicant for a job in 300. Failing that, I could become a full-time writer, though it depends on whether I can publish my current book.

3. Ugh, it's hard, especially since I lived in the most liberal area in the entire country. For what it's worth, Tel Aviv looks very much like any midsize city in the northern US, only uglier and with Arabs replacing blacks (they're also treated about the same). But then you leave the city and get to areas that Under the Banner of Heaven would describe perfectly well if you did a global search and replace to change "Saints" to "Orthodox Jews."

4. My parents used to own a series of cats. Among those who were with us when I was around, I don't think any lasted for more than a few months before either of my parents decided to get rid of it. By my count, we had one cat in Israel named Grigia, then another named Grigio, and then another in Singapore who each family member called by a different name.

5. Being a failure. I've evidently failed as a blogger, given 2) there's a pretty good chance I'll fail as a mathematician, and I don't think my chances of getting my book (or any book) published are especially high. I have a four-year window to succeed in something before I lose my stipend checks and university housing.
